In these times of increasing antibiotic resistance amoung pathogenic bacteria there is an obvious drive to produce new antimicrobials.

Work in this area is in two areas:

Antimicrobial Plant Extracts- In collaboration with Professor Thomas Smith in the Biomedical Research Center at Sheffield Hallam University and Dr Simon Jones in the Department of Chemistry and in collaboration with Blueberry Therapeutics we have an ongoing project investigating antimicrobial compounds from plant extracts aimed at combatting fungal infections LINK HERE.

Isolation of Novel Bacteriophage-

We are embarking on a programme of work aimed at isolation of novel bacteriophage and bacteriophage derived proteins targetted against a range of oral pathogenic bacteria.  This work was initially carried out by Mike Spencer and Arati Nepal but is now being followed up by Mohammed Zubidi on an Iraqi govt sponsored studentship.
